WHAT ARE EMPLOYERS ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR IN YOUR RESUME?

Do you ever wonder exactly what those recruiters are looking at when they are examining your resume? Or what they focus on when they skim through it? Well here is a sneak look into some of the key things they pinpoint on when your document hits their desk.

Is your resume formatted properly?

First and foremost you want to make sure your resume is modern and clean. Do you have your contact information such as email address, phone number and LinkedIn page? Are your sections clearly defined, and text and page formatting is uniformed and consistent? Did you list all of your qualifications/skills, experience, and education?

Are all your words spelled correctly and your grammar correct?

One of the first things you want to make sure of is that your spelling and grammar are correct. This shows them you are attentive to detail and took the time to make sure you are spelling pertinent industry information correctly and expressing it appropriately with proper use of language mechanics.

What have you accomplished in your roles?

Employers do not only want to see what responsibilities you had, but what you have accomplished for the companies you have worked for. Sure they are impressed with your skills but what do you bring to the table? Will you make them better with the addition of your presence?

Loyalty, loyalty, loyalty

When a recruiter looks at your resume, they want to know that you’re loyal. They are looking for two or more years of time with each employer, depending on the industry field. This shows your commitment to your jobs or if you are one that doesn’t like to sit still.

Don’t leave any room for assumptions!

Small things such as large gaps between employment and the inclusion of “References available upon request” are not necessarily deal-breakers but you should stay away from them, if possible. The references line may give the impression that you have been fired or laid off at some point so you want to leave that out.
