Summer, Summer, Summertime!

Being an adult is all fun and games until summertime hits and there is no official summer break. You still have to go to work and keep the grind going. Although it would be great to have three months of freedom from responsibilities, the reality is that you just have to find a way to make the best of it. And here are a few ways you can do that and/or convince your management and peers to do the same.

· Break your work up into smaller segments. People are more productive in short spurts rather than long stints. Knock out some items then take a break. Start something new after your break and move through your project that way. It will make the process a little more smooth.

· Use your PTO and take time off. Employees are also more productive when they take time off to relax, vacation, or just take a break from the day-to-day. The summer months are typically slower so it should not be a burden to other team members for you to have some PTO. Time off also builds morale which makes the environment better for everyone.

· Request flexible work hours. Along with people taking vacations and children being out of school, it helps to foster a strong work/life balance. This balance is essential for you to be able to juggle all the facets of daily life without burnout. Many companies are open to the idea, especially during the slow summer months.

· Recommend some office summer fun. Talk to management and your peers about implementing activities for the team to do together like having office picnics, games with prizes and incentives, or ask them to provide classes like yoga or spin to help you stay active. It’s always a plus when you can have fun where you work.

· Switch up your usual routine. Setting up your workspace in a different area or having an iced coffee to start your day instead of hot tea could be a real booster. Even just having some breakfast if that’s not something you would normally do will liven things up a bit. Taking a break from the norm is a good way to stimulate the senses.
